What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is pain in the lower back or hip that radiates down into the back of the leg, and is caused by a pinched or irritated sciatic nerve, degenerative disc disease or herniated discs.

Facts of Sciatica

Sciatic pain is a pinching like pressure n the sciatic nerve. There are primarily four things that can create this you may have one or more of the following conditions: Piriformis Syndrome, Herniated Discs, Spinal Stenosis, or Isthmic Spondylolisthesis.

Common Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Pain in the rear or leg that is worse when sitting
  • Burning Sensations or Tingling Radiating down the leg
  • Weakness, and Numbness.

Acupuncture for Sciatica

Acupuncture speeds natural healing by relaxing the fascia and tendons in the back, hip and pelvis and by strengthening the muscles. By correcting the specific imbalances in the muscles and body, acupuncture can prevent the tension and muscle spasms that cause sciatica pain. Treating the imbalance prevents recurrences of sciatica.

Acupuncture is well known for its ability to treat non-specific pain
and inflammation. Traditional Chinese medicine often treats sciatica with a combination of therapies. Your acupuncture physician may recommend tui na massage, stretching and Chinese herbs in addition to your acupuncture treatment.

Your treatment will vary according to the severity, cause and duration of the condition. Acute sciatica may resolve in a few sessions. Recurring or chronic sciatica may require a treatment plan of three months or longer. After the initial series of treatments and your pain subsides, follow-up treatments are recommended. In addition to your acupuncture therapy, your acupuncture physician can aid you in developing a health plan of exercise and nutrition to strengthen the lower back and to maintain optimal health.

Acupuncture Vs Western Medicine

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed medications for the treatment of sciatica. These painkillers can have adverse side effects that affect overall health. Acupuncture for the treatment of sciatica is a drug-free, holistic therapy with virtually no side effects.

Acupuncture treats the primary symptom of pain by increasing the body production of endorphins and steroids. Endorphins reduce pain, while steroids decrease inflammation.
